Women's Hockey World Cup: India Look To Brush Aside China's Challenge

Their defensive prowess on display in the 1-1 draw against Olympic bronze medallist England, India would look to plug holes in the attacking department and register their first win of the women's hockey World Cup in their second game against China on Tuesday. The Indians produced a superlative defensive performance, spearheaded by skipper and goalkeeper Savita Punia, in the drawn game against England in their opening Pool B match on Sunday.

Women's Hockey World Cup: India eye China scalp in second pool game

The Indians produced a superlative defensive performance, spearheaded by skipper and goalkeeper Savita Punia, in the drawn game against England in their opening Pool B match on Sunday. The likes of vice-captain Deep Grace Ekka, Nikki Pradhan, Gurjit Kaur and Udita dished out an excellent performance, denying England a single penalty corner in the entire 60 minutes. Their only blemish was the ninth minute goal they conceded when Isabella Petter neatly deflected in a pass from outside the 'D'.

Women's Hockey World Cup: We want to fill the void of missing a medal at the Olympics, says India captain Savita Punia

The tears at the end of the Tokyo Olympics accompanied a historic achievement. A fourth place in the final standings may mean missing a medal by a whisker, but a women's hockey team from India had never finished that high at the Games. It followed a welcome chance to debut at the Pro League, where India finished third, ahead of teams like Belgium, Spain, Germany and England -- winning six of their 14 matches. One vital cog missing in the team's wheel during the Pro League was inspirational skipper Rani. A hamstring injury had kept her on the sidelines for 10 months, before she finally worked her way back for the European tour. But coach Janneke Schopman gave Rani just one Pro League game on the tour, her 250th cap, but the central striker looked as good as never being injured at all. It seemed India's set-up was complete just ahead of two big events -- the World Cup in Spain and Netherlands, followed by the Commonwealth Games in England. The squad was announced with all the excepted names, except one -- Rani. WHY EXACTLY IS RANI NOT IN THE WORLD CUP SQUAD?It was a surprise for many to see Rani's name missing from the World Cup squad, but coach Schopman, who interestingly played against Rani at the 2010 World Cup, came on record to say that Rani is yet to fully recuperate from her injury.

India name 18-member women's hockey team for CWG, Rani Rampal misses out again

Rani Rampal left out yet again for failing to regain full fitness after an injury. The CWG team is very similar to the one taking part in the World Cup next month. The side will be captained by goalkeeper Savita Punia while experienced defender Deep Grace Ekka will be her deputy in the Birmingham CWG, to be held from July 28 to August 8.

Rani misses out as India name tried and tested squad for women's hockey World Cup

Rani Rampal, who is yet to regain full fitness, did not find a place in the Indian team for the next month's FIH World Cup as Hockey India announced an 18-member squad on Tuesday. Rani, who led the Indian women to the historic fourth-place finish at the Tokyo Olympics, was picked for the recent FIH Pro League matches in Belgium and Netherlands after recovering from a hamstring injury. She didn't feature in the first four games of the side's European leg of Pro League, raising doubts about her full fitness.

Indian hockey coaches to use Pro League matches to get better insights ahead of CWG

Commonwealth Games, the Indian men's and women's hockey team coaches are looking at the upcoming FIH Pro League matches to gain better insights about the sides ahead of the multi-sport event. The Indian men's team is scheduled to play its next round of FIH Pro League matches against hosts Belgium (June 11 and June 12) and Netherlands (June 18 and June 19), while the women's side will play Belgium (June 11 and June 12), Argentina (June 18 and June 19) and the United States (June 21 and June 22). "With little less than two months for the CWG, we will utilise this time to ensure we are best prepared for the prestigious event. The Pro League matches will give us insights into the areas that require improvement ahead of the CWG," Indian men's team chief coach Reid said in a Hockey India statement. "We will reconvene the national camp for CWG in the last week of June and we will have a good three weeks to prepare before the contingent leaves for Birmingham."
