CWG 2022: We lost momentum after the 'clock howler', says coach Janneke Schopman after Indian women's hockey team's semifinal defeat

Commonwealth Games (CWG) semifinal loss to Australia, coach Janneke Schopman said her side was left deflated and lost momentum after the incident. The Hockeyroos set up the gold-medal clash against England after a controversial 3-0 win over India on penalties here on Friday. During the shootout, Australia's Rosie Malone missed her shot but to the dismay of the Indian team and fans, the forward was given a second chance as a technical official, B Morgan of England, had failed to start the clock on time. Each player gets eight seconds to put the ball into the net in the shootout. Given a second chance, Malone scored and that set the tone for the shootout as the Indians failed their first three attempts, while Australia converted all their chances.

CWG 2022: India waste chances but trounce Ghana

The last time India faced Ghana was in the World League Round 2 in 2014-15, which they won 13-0. But much has changed in Ghana hockey since then and it was on show at the University of Birmingham hockey centre. For India, the beginning was bright as dragflick ace Gurjit Kaur found the top-left corner of the goal off the first penalty corner the team earned in the third minute. It was evident that Ghana struggled initially to adjust to the pace generated by India but what they lacked in skill they made up for in spirit and execution. They spent the first quarter defending their citadel with 10 players packing the circle, leaving India in considerable discomfort due to the lack of space. But Ghana’s inexperience weighed on them as India doubled the lead in the 28th minute when Neha’s impressive run near the post was deflected home by a defender. The first half was frustrating for India and it showed on chief coach Janneke Schopman’s face as penalty corners were wasted due to poor injection and execution.

CWG 2022: After World Cup debacle, Indian women's hockey team keen on making amends

This will be the Indian women's hockey team's mantra as they begin their quest for a Commonwealth Games medal on Friday. After the fourth-place finish at the Tokyo Olympics and the third-position in the FIH Pro League came the disappointment of the ninth place at the World Cup recently. For a team which was on a high for a year, the World Cup performance was a rude shock but Savita and Co. will not allow that debacle to weigh them down as they take on Ghana in their opener.

Hockey At CWG 2022: Indian Women Look To Bury World Cup Ghosts

A podium finish on its mind, the Indian women's hockey team would look to bury the ghosts of a disastrous World Cup campaign by steam-rolling minnows Ghana in the Commonwealth Games opener on Thursday. The Indian women are clubbed in Pool A alongside hosts England, Canada, Wales and Ghana, while Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, Scotland and Kenya complete Pool B. Just like their male counterparts, the Indian women returned empty-handed from the last edition of the Games in Gold Coast, finishing fourth after being routed 0-6 by England in the bronze medal play-off match.

Hockey at CWG: Indian women look to bury World Cup ghosts, seek Tokyo inspiration to end medal drought

Commonwealth Games (CWG) 2022 journey with the game against Ghana on Thursday. The Indian women's team is clubbed in Pool A alongside hosts England, Canada, Wales and Ghana, while Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, Scotland and Kenya complete Pool B. Just like their male counterparts, the Indian women returned empty-handed from the last edition of the Games in Gold Coast, finishing fourth after being routed 0-6 by England in the bronze medal play-off match. Going into the Games, the Indian women must have been haunted by their below-par effort in the recently concluded World Cup in Spain and the Netherlands, where the Savita Punia-led side finished a disappointing ninth. And the Janneke Schopman-coached side would be desperate to prove that it is a far better side than what the recent results indicate. They would be itching to prove their detractors wrong about the perception that a historic fourth place finish in last year's Tokyo Olympics was a mere fluke.

The girls want to work hard and go again: Janneke Schopman

Much has changed in the last year. Sjoerd Marijne made way for Janneke Schopman as the head coach. Wayne Lombard quit as the scientific advisor. The face of the team and skipper Rani Rampal has been sidelined - battling injuries - which has seen goalkeeper Savita Punia assume leadership role. In their first major outing after the Tokyo Games - the World Cup - the team finished a disappointing ninth recently. They were let down by lack of on-field conversion of opportunities and poor success rate in penalty corners. In the six matches they played, India earned 31 penalty corners and converted a mere three.
