India won the third and deciding Twenty20 against Australia in the last over after punchy fifties by Virat Kohli and Suryakumar Yadav in Hyderabad on Sunday.
A tried and tested Indian squad has been named for the T20 World Cup 2022. The squad bore a striking resemblance to the one that played in the recently-concluded Asia Cup, barring the exception of Jasprit Bumrah and Harshal Patel - both of whom made a return to the squad after recuperating from injuries. In the spin department, India has gone ahead with three specialists - Ravichandran Ashwin, Yuzvendra Chahal and Axar Patel. Former Indian cricket team player Sanjay Manjrekar gave his take on the spin troika.
Jasprit Bumrah's fitness status will be a matter of attention when an out of sorts Indian team will look at course correction options against Australia in the second T20 International and strive to keep the three-match series alive, in Nagpur on Friday. Bumrah, who has been out of action since the end of England tour, skipped the Asia Cup due to back injury. However, to everyone's surprise, the team management didn't play him during the high-scoring first T20I in Mohali, raising doubts whether he has still attained peak fitness or not.
Bumrah, who has been out of action since the end of England tour, skipped the Asia Cup due to back injury. However, to everyone's surprise, the team management didn't play him during the high-scoring first T20I in Mohali, raising doubts whether he has still attained peak fitness or not. To compound the team's worries, the 'three-and-a-half' pronged pace attack, including Hardik Pandya, conceded 150 runs in 14 overs. Bhuvneshwar Kumar, the seasoned pro, has already been taken to cleaners. He has leaked 49 runs in the three penultimate overs (19th) that he bowled against Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Australia.
Suryakumar Yadav has replaced Pakistan captain Babar Azam to occupy the third spot in the T20I batter's list in the latest ICC Men's Player Rankings issued on Wednesday. Yadav impressed with a classy 46 during India's four-wicket loss to Australia in the opening match of their three-game series at Mohali on Tuesday. The knock helped him to close in on Pakistan opener Mohammad Rizwan at the top of the T20I batter's chart. The right-hander dethroned Babar from the third spot, with Rizwan now just 45 rating points ahead of him. Rizwan hit a half-century in Pakistan's loss to England in Karachi on Tuesday and maintains a narrow advantage at the top of the rankings with a career-high total of 825 rating points.
The Indian cricket team selectors went with a tried and tested squad for the 2022 T20 World Cup that starts in mid-October. Almost all the players, who featured in the Asia Cup found a place in the World Cup squad. Only Jasprit Bumrah and Harshal Patel, who were recuperating from injury, have made a comeback to the side. The team will be led by Rohit Sharma while KL Rahul will be his deputy. The latter's form in the Asia Cup came under much scrutiny. Though he scored a half-century in India's last match at the Asia Cup against Afghanistan, he failed to score with a decent strike-rate in rest of the matches.
Harshal Patel, who missed the Asia Cup with injuries were predictably back as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the 15-member squad for the T20 World Cup. All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, who recently had a knee surgery after a 'freak' injury failed to make the cut, as reported first by TOI. The team for the T20 World Cup will be led by Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul will be his deputy in the marquee tournament which will take place in Australia, starting October 16. India will play their first match against Pakistan on October 23.
India would need to get the best out of their thin bowling resources and avoid too much experimentation when they clash with Sri Lanka in their must win Super 4 game in the Asia Cup on Tuesday. In the absence of injured Ravindra Jadeja, Harshal Patel and Jasprit Bumrah, India do not have a lot of options to play with in the bowling department. India went in with five bowling options against Pakistan on Sunday and it did not work out in their favour as Bhuvneshwar Kumar had a rare off day.
