Bishweshwar Nandi Named Women's Gymnastic Team Coach For Commonwealth Games 2022

Gymnastics coach Bishweshwar Nandi, who guided Dipa Karmakar to a historic fourth place finish at the 2016 Rio Olympics, has been named coach of the Indian women's team for the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham in place of controversial Rohit Jaiswal. Jaiswal, who was earlier designated as the women's team coach, was dropped from the CWG-bound team after he was accused by gymnast Aruna Budda Reddy for videographing her without her consent. "I've done my biometrics a day before and am expecting my Visa to arrive by tomorrow. I will join the team by July 29," Nandi told PTI from the national camp in New Delhi.

Hosting CWG has to be more affordable: Birmingham 2022 CEO

Commonwealth Games have been staged outside the UK or Australia and the CEO of the upcoming Birmingham edition, Ian Reid, feels the multi-sporting event needs to be 'more affordable' to be hosted across 56 member nations. Delhi 2010 was the last edition to be held outside Australia or the UK over the past two decades. Australia will be hosting the 2026 Games as well across four centres in the state of Victoria.

With 72 nations expected to participate in the Birmingham Games scheduled to start from July 28, Indian athletes, spearheaded by Tokyo Olympics gold medallist Neeraj Chopra, are expected to do well in this edition too. There is however no shooting at the Games this time and that is likely to dent India's overall medal count. CWG 2022, India Table Tennis Preview: India Will Find It Tough To Match Gold Coast High In Birmingham

Scaling a new high after the 'peak' of 2018 would be tough but the Indian table tennis contingent would be a content lot if it manages to match its record eight-medal tally of Gold Coast at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games. India had exceeded expectations in Australia by winning three gold, a couple of silver and three bronze medals. Half of those medals, including two gold, came via Manika Batra whose career graph and popularity sky rocketed thereafter. The 27-year-old from Delhi stunned Olympic medallist Feng Tianwei of Singapore not once but twice in the competition to secure an individual and team gold for India.

My fight is with myself at the Commonwealth Games: Mirabai Chanu

Commonwealth Games (CWG) gold at Birmingham 2022. CWG has traditionally been a happy hunting ground for lifters from India, and Mira has no qualms about admitting that, even when asked if it is because of the absence of weightlifting powerhouses China and Korea. "Yes, (when compared to other events) the competition in weightlifting is a bit less in CWG, but it's not that the absence of strong weightlifting nations makes it easier for us. Every competition teaches us something," said Mira, as she sat down for a virtual interaction with TimesofIndia.com.It was heartening to see a beaming Mira on the podium in Tokyo last year, especially considering the condition she found herself in after the two-month lockdown in the middle of 2020. It left coach Vijay Sharma worried once training resumed. The shoulders weren't as strong as before and the back not strong enough to lift the weights that Mira found easy before Covid-19 stopped practice.
