Indian cricket team's Asia Cup 2023 squad is most likely to be announced on Monday. Several reports have claimed that the BCCI selectors will meet Team India captain Rohit Sharma and coach Rahul Dravid to decide on the final squad for the Asia Cup, which begins on August 30. India's first match is against arch-rivals Pakistan on September 2 in Sri Lanka. The Asia Cup squad holds extra importance as it will more or less give an idea about what the squad for the ODI World Cup 2023 will look like.
The Indian selection panel, led by Ajit Agarkar, is likely to go for a 17-member squad for the upcoming Asia Cup in order to check out all possible options ahead of the ODI World Cup, starting October 5. It is also learnt that BCCI is bucking the convention for the first time and head coach Rahul Dravid will also be present in his official capacity during the meeting scheduled in the national capital on Monday morning. It can be confirmed that neither Ravi Shastri nor Anil Kumble were part of selection meetings during their tenure as national coach.
Former India captain Sourav Ganguly on Friday said promising left-hander Tilak Varma should be India's choice for No 4 batsman at the ICC World Cup 2023 if a front-line player like Shreyas Iyer is not available. Shreyas has been recuperating at the NCA after a surgery on his injured back. But Ganguly said India has several options for the crucial No 4 slot. "Who said we don't have a No. 4? We have so many (batsmen) who can bat at that spot. I think differently; my mindset is different. This is a fantastic side," Ganguly said on the sidelines of a Denver event where he was announced as the 'Brand Face.' "I see Tilak Varma as an option, being a left-hander," Ganguly said, highlighting Varma's adaptability and fearless approach to the game.
The Asia Cup 2023 will start in less than two weeks' time. Most of the teams are in the final final phase of the preparation. For the Asian sides, this tournament offers a great chance to test their final combination ahead of the ODI World Cup 2023. While the players are in their different modes of prepping up for the continental contest, Bangladesh star opener Mohammad Naim Sheikh has gone on a 'fiery' path, quite literally. In a video that is being shared widely on social media Sheikh can be seen walking on fire as part of 'mind-training' ahead of Asia Cup. The video was posted from the verified account of Saif Ahmed, whose 'X' bio reads 'Social Media Manager of  @BanglaTigers_ae & @RangpurRiders'
The No. 4 conundrum remains one India's biggest headaches, going into the Asia Cup 2023. While KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer are capable of delivering at the spot, they haven't played cricket for a long time. Due to their lack of match practice, India's options for the No. 4 spot are limited. Assessing the current situation, former India head coach Ravi Shastri suggested Virat Kohli's name for the spot. Shastri even revealed that he had suggested Kohli's name for the same spot in the 2019 ODI World Cup too.
Star India batter Virat Kohli is considered one of the most loved sportspersons in the world. Known for his blistering knocks, the former India skipper is slowly inching closer to breaking Sachin Tendulkar's historic record of hundred international centuries. Kohli, who has not featured in any T20I game, since T20 World Cup 2022, is currently having some time off to prepare for the upcoming Asia Cup. Apart from his batting heroics, Kohli is also admired by the fans for his generous nature, and a very good example of his generosity was seen recently.
