"Was Sledging His...": Australia Great Clarifies Comments About Virat Kohli During Border-Gavaskar Trophy

Australia great Mark Waugh created quite a stir during the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Nagpur. In that match, Virat Kohli was responsible for two dropped chances.

First, the former India skipper gave Australia's star batter Steve Smith a reprieve in the 16th over of the day. On the first ball of that over, Smith went for a drive against a fuller delivery and got a thick outside edge.

Stationed at first slip, Kohli stretched his right hand but could not hold on to the ball. Then in the second session, Peter Handscomb edged one off Jadeja.

The ball got deflected after hitting wicketkeeper KS Bharat's gloves. Kohli, again fielding at slips, could not reach the ball.

The rivalry between India and Australia on the cricket field has always been quite bitter but star batsman Virat Kohli believes that the behaviour of the players has gotten better with time thanks to the Indian Premier League (IPL). In a recent conversation with South Africa legend and his former Royal Challengers Bangalore teammate AB De Villiers, Kohli said that the competitiveness is still quite there between the two sides but the sledging is not ‘nasty' thanks to the time that the players have spent with each other as part of various IPL teams.
Team India suffered a forgetful 10-wicket defeat against Australia in the second ODI on Sunday in Visakhapatnam. Asked to bat first, the likes of Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli and others miserably failed to leave a mark as the hosts were bundled out for 117. Mitchell Starc was the pick among the bowlers as the pacer achieved his ninth five-wicket haul. Later, the visitors made a mockery of the target with the openers Travis Head (51*) and Mitchell Marsh (66*) remaining unbeaten, taking their side across the line in just 11 overs.
Team India kick-started the three-match ODI series with a brilliant five-wicket win in the first match on Friday. Opted to bowl first, the hosts restricted Australia at 188 after Mohammed Siraj and Mohammed Shami scalped three wickets each. Later, Team India suffered an early loss of wickets as they were five down with only 83 runs on the board. It was then KL Rahul, who stood up and played an unbeaten knock of 75 runs off 91 balls and took the Hardik Pandya-led side across the line, in just 39.5 overs. Rahul's magnificent knock left everyone utterly impressed as the batter was earlier going through a lean patch and had lost his place in the team, after back-to-back failures.
Virat Kohli on Sunday once again became a victim of LBW dismissal. The batter was dismissed for 31 runs on the bowling of Nathan Ellis as he missed his flick down the leg side in the second ODI against Australia in Visakhapatnam. His mode of dismissal was similar to that in the first ODI in which a Mitchell Starc delivery hit him on the pad and he had to depart for four runs. Former India captain and batter Sunil Gavaskar was unhappy over the fact that Kohli made the same mistake of playing across the line in the second ODI as well.
Fitness is much more than just a word for star India player Virat Kohli. A Delhi-born boy, fond of chole bhature, not only sacrificed his love for the food to be superfit, but also took his training to the next level to set a benchmark for fitness. All those efforts seem to have paid off when the batter runs across the pitch to easily convert a single into a double, and at times, the twos into threes. A similar kind of agility is seen when Kohli is fielding on the ground.
Former Pakistan pacer Shoaib Akhtar believes that India batter Virat Kohli is going to score 110 international centuries by the time he brings down curtains on his career. After a wait of 1205 days, Virat Kohli last week finally registered a Test century, bringing up three figures on day four of the fourth Test against Australia in Ahmedabad. Kohli brought up his 28th Test century. There was a gap of 41 innings between his last century and this one, with the previous one coming over three years ago against Bangladesh in November 2019.
