The Manchester United takeover process is finally edging towards a conclusion, although not one many supporters wanted. Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani's proposal to buy 100 per cent of the club and clear the debts appealed to plenty of fans.

However, his withdrawal killed the dream of a total Glazers exit with Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s minority investment keeping them in situ.

Ratcliffe, for the majority of the saga, had wanted to take over the 69 per cent majority which would have seen the current United owners ousted.

MEN Sport learned that Avram and Joel Glazer were dragging their heels over selling up their portion of the pie, subsequently causing Ratcliffe to pivot.
