Manchester United picked up a morale-boosting win in their Boxing Day meeting with Aston Villa as Erik ten Hag and his misfiring players hit the midway point in their Premier League charge.
United are now preparing to take on Nottingham Forest in what is their final match before the New Year rolls around. Depending on results elsewhere, United could theoretically bridge the gap on the top-four positions to one point on Saturday afternoon.
However, even in that scenario Manchester City would have a game in hand. In their first season with Ten Hag at the helm, United finished third in the Premier League standings and they, also, brought an end to their trophy hoodoo after six years.
Things have not gone entirely to plan this term, though, and they could be subject to further misery beyond January.
