Super Eagles, changing face of Nigerian football

By the time you are reading this, the Super Eagles of Nigeria would have completed a very critical assignment against the Mediterranean Knights of Libya.

It is critical because so much is at stake depending on how the match ended yesterday. A good and convincing victory will consolidate the gains of the previous two matches.

The Super Eagles need to return very quickly to winning ways and restore the confidence of Nigerians in their national team as well as in the ensemble of Nigerian coaches.Winning well against Libya might even change the fortune of football in Nigeria by boosting confidence all around, boosting the football-economy opportunities, receding the matter of a foreign coach further to the background, and creating a firmer ground for general improvement of Nigerian football.

The reality is that Nigeria’s football fortune at the national level greatly impacts what happens to sports, as whole, in the country.Super Eagles and Football are that important and powerful.The aura around Nigerian football these days is good.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has awarded the botched Libya versus Nigeria Africa Cup of Nations qualification match to the Super Eagles.
Despite their inability to play in the last round of the Africa Cup of Nations qualifying series following CAF’s decision to call off their game against Libya, the Super Eagles have moved up three places in the latest FIFA rankings.   In the October World ranking released, yesterday, by FIFA, the team moved to the 36th position from the previous 39th, gaining 1,503.29 points within the period under review.   The Super Eagles defeated Libya 1-0 in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Uyo, on October 11, but the return leg of the tie scheduled for Benghazi, Libya on October 15 was called off following the Libyans’ alleged ill-treatment of the Nigerian delegation two days before the game.   African football governing body, CAF is expected to rule on the botched game this week. Nigeria’s new FIFA ranking also reflects on the Super Eagles’ position in Africa, as they are now the fourth-best team in the continent, up from last month’s sixth position.    Morocco, Senegal, and Egypt are the three leading teams in that order.  Argentina, France (second), and Spain (third) are still the leading teams in the world, followed by England (fourth), Brazil (fifth) and Belgium (sixth).
The Super Eagles of Nigeria have moved up by three spots to place world 36th in the October FIFA ranking.
After much debate as to how the game should be changed, the new football rules will be seen in action this weekend in the Football Interprovincial Series.
Next Friday and Saturday, the GAA's Football Review Committee will showcase its proposed changes to the game of Gaelic football.
