Sumit Nagal Bows Out Of Indian Wells ATP Event Following First-Round Loss

Sumit Nagal was handed a straight-set defeat by Canada's Milos Raonic in the opening round of the BNP Paribas Open here, bringing a swift end to the Indian tennis player's campaign after he made the main draw as a 'lucky loser' due to Rafael Nadal's pullout.

Nagal, who is ranked 101st in the ATP charts, went down 3-6 3-6 in a match that lasted one hour and 28 minutes. Raonic, who entered the match with a protected ranking of 224, converted three of the 12 break points he earned during the encounter.

Nagal, on the other hand, could not manage to make good of the two break points he got. Nagal had lost in the second round of the qualifying tournament but snaked into main draw after Nadal's last-minute withdrawal, citing lack of readiness for the event.

The Spaniard has been battling injury issues and was forced to undergo a hip surgery last season. The 26-year-old Indian created quite a flutter in January when he advanced to the second round of the Australian Open.

Indian tennis player Sumit Nagal failed to make the main draw of the Miami Open on debut after losing his final qualifying round match to Hong Kong's Coleman Wong in Miami on Tuesday. Nagal lost 6-3 1-6 5-7 to the 19-year-old, squandering the advantage he secured by winning the first set. Wong, who like Nagal is playing his first Miami Open, defeated France's Hugo Gaston 6-2 3-6 6-2 in his first qualifying round.

Mental Conditioning Coach Paddy Upton To Help Indian Men's Hockey Team In Paris Olympics

It's mind over matter for Hockey India as the sports body hired renowned South African mental conditioning coach Paddy Upton to assist the men's national team in the Paris Olympics. Upton, who played a role in India winning the 2011 Cricket World Cup, will be a part of the support staff of the country's men's hockey team in Paris. He was also there when the team won gold medals at the recent Asian Champions Trophy and Asian Games.
