Steven Naismith believes Hearts are taking the right steps to challenge the Old Firm for honours in the future. The Tynecastle club are on course to finish a clear third in the Premiership – despite yesterday’s defeat to Rangers.

Before that, Naismith’s side had won eight games on the spin in a 12-match unbeaten run – and still have a Scottish Cup quarter-final against Morton to relish.

After a difficult start to life as Gorgie gaffer, the 37-year-old has excelled in the dugout. And Naismith is convinced Hearts can compete with Rangers and Celtic at the top.

Ahead of the derby clash with Hibs in midweek, he said: “I’ve never actually thought of what might have been had we started this season like this.
