We're in the Golden Age of ironic foul balls. This week we had the dude in Seattle who caught foul balls on back-to-back pitches and now Cincinnati Reds outfielder Spencer Steer hit one to not only a member of his family, but his twin brother.
Fraternal twin brother, but still…
MLB.com's Mark Sheldon got the scoop on the league's second "What are the odds?" foul ball of the week.
Dodgers pitcher James Paxton delivered a 93 mph pitch to Steer which he swung at and got a piece of sending into the seats above home plates, which just so happened to be where his fraternal twin brother Travis was sitting.
"It was coming right back at me," Trevor said. "I was like, ‘I’ve got to do something.’ It was pretty wild."
Think about the odds of catching a foul ball at all. There are tens of thousands of people in that stadium and only a handful are going to go home with a free souvenir.
Now, think of your chances of catching a foul ball from a specific player. The odds of that happening and then that player being your brother — your twin brother — is even more insane.
On top of that, it's not like Travis follows the Reds like some kind of baseball Deadhead and sits in the same general area each game. This was the first game he was in attendance for this year!
"It’s pretty cool," Spencer said. "It’s hard for him to get to games. I think it was the first game he’s seen all year and I hit a foul ball to him. Pretty crazy odds but a really cool story."
It is a cool story. Would've been cooler if they were identical twins, but still another unbelievably ironic foul ball story in just one week.
