Steven Naismith adamant Rangers and Celtic aren't 'untouchable' and Hearts have plan to catch them

Steven Naismith believes Hearts are taking the right steps to challenge the Old Firm for honours in the future.

The Tynecastle club are on course to finish a clear third in the Premiership – despite yesterday’s defeat to Rangers. Before that, Naismith’s side had won eight games on the spin in a 12-match unbeaten run – and still have a Scottish Cup quarter-final against Morton to relish. After a difficult start to life as Gorgie gaffer, the 37-year-old has excelled in the dugout. And Naismith is convinced Hearts can compete with Rangers and Celtic at the top.

Ahead of the derby clash with Hibs in midweek, he said: “I’ve never actually thought of what might have been had we started this season like this. My experience told me it would take time. And by changing things like we did, people make mistakes which can be costly. But I hope next season, the one after that and the one after that, we’re not a blank canvas any more. We’ll be in a better place so progression should be quicker.

“Can we challenge the Old Firm in the future? People talk about the George Burley season here 20 years ago but I wish I had his budget! That shows how tough it is. The Old Firm will go through waves. Celtic under Ange Postecoglou were untouchable. But both clubs have gone through transitions which is probably where they are now.

“If you look at clubs around the world who have challenged the big boys, it’s about how you get there. You have to not get ahead of yourself. I definitely think we’re taking big steps – and the right ones.”
