Steven Gerrard is in talks with Turkish champions Trabzonspor for a shock return to management. The former Rangers boss has been out of work since Aston Villa binned him in October after 11 months in charge.

He was linked with taking over as Poland manager, but travelled to Istanbul this week to meet the presidential candidate of Trabzonspor, Ertugrul Dogan, who has promised to appoint the ex-Ibrox boss if he wins the forthcoming elections.

Trabzonspor are currently in sixth place in the Turkish Super League after winning it last year, but have big ambitions to become a major force in the Champions League in the future.

Manager Abdullah Avcı quit earlier this month and reports in Turkey have indicated Gerrard had agreed to take charge if, as expected, Dogan wins the presidential election this month.
