Saudi athletes end Asian Games with 10 medals, 19th-placed ranking overall

HANGZHOU: Saudi Arabia finished the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, with a total of 10 medals — four gold, two silver and four bronze.

The games, which saw the participation of 12,000 athletes representing 45 Asian countries, concluded on Sunday evening at the Olympic Stadium in Hangzhou.

The medal haul sees the Kingdom finish the competition in 19th place in the overall rankings. The closing ceremony saw the flag of Nagoya in Japan hoisted, which will be the host city for the 20th Asian Games in 2026.

Following the ceremony, a parade of the participating countries took place, with Saudi Arabian jiu-jitsu athlete Abdulmalik Al-Murdhi holding the Saudi flag.

The youngest athlete to represent the Kingdom’s delegation, Nada defeated his Kyrgyz contender Abdulrahman Hajj to win the bronze and become the youngest winner in the history of Saudi Arabia’s participation in the Asian Games, a media statement said. His victory increased Saudi Arabia’s medal tally to 10 — four gold, two silver and four bronze — in the event that concludes tomorrow. In the karate competitions, Fajr Al-Nashri was eliminated following his defeat to Jordan’s Mohammed Al-Jaffar, in the round of 16 in the 84 kg weight category, with a score of 1-5. India clinched their first-ever medal in women's sepaktakraw at the Asian Games with the regu team winning a bronze after losing to powerhouse Thailand in the semifinals on Friday. The Indian women's team of Ayekpam Maipak Devi, Oinam Chaoba Devi, Khushbu, Elangbam Priya Devi and Elangbam Leirentombi Devi lost 10-21, 13-21 in the semifinals. HANGZHOU, China: Saudi Arabian Abdulmalik Almurdhi collected the Kingdom’s seventh medal at the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou after defeating his Jordanian opponent at jiu-jitsu on Thursday. Almurdhi took the bronze in the under-62 kg weight category after beating Jordan’s Khalil Alarnaut, a media statement reported. Saudi Arabia’s medal count has now gone up to seven: three golds, two silvers, and two bronze medals. Osama Qandeel was eliminated in the round of 16 in the under-69 kg weight category at jiu-jitsu after losing against his Kazakh contender 9-0. Meanwhile, the Kingdom’s weightlifter Ali Al-Khazal finished in first place in Group Two of the men’s 109 kg competition on Thursday.
