Newcastle United have always had Alexander Isak ‘high on their agenda’ this summer but Dominic Calvert-Lewin was the top choice, according to transfer insider Dean Jones. Eddie Howe has overseen a strong start to the Premier League season at St James’ Park and still has time to bolster his squad ahead of the September 1 deadline.

According to The Athletic, Newcastle have agreed a deal to sign the Sweden international from Sociedad. The report states that the entire agreement is worth in region of £60 million with Isak’s move to the North East now imminent.

If the deal is completed, it will see the 22-year-old leapfrog January signing Bruno Guimaraes as the Magpies’ most expensive signing.

Meanwhile, it has been reported that Newcastle have also agreed a deal for Watford forward Joao Pedro, worth up to £30 million, although the Hornets are understood to hold reservations over the structure of the payments.
