"Never Demanded Exemption From Asian Games Trials Despite Being Considered For It": Sakshi Malik

Olympic medallist Sakshi Malik on Thursday said she never demanded any exemption from Asian Games trials despite the IOA ad-hoc panel offering to consider her case just like compatriots Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia.

She also alleged that the move to exempt Vinesh and Bajrang from trials is an attempt by the government to "break the unity of the wrestlers." Sakshi, who competes in the 62 kg category, along with Vinesh (53 kg) and Bajrang (65 kg), was at the forefront of the protest against outgoing Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who on Thursday got bail from a Delhi court after the police charge-sheeted him on allegations of sexual harassment.

The IOA ad-hoc panel led by Bhupinder Bajwa courted controversy on Tuesday after granting exemptions to Bajrang and Vinesh without following due protocols, forcing U-20 world champion Antim Panghal and 65 kg grappler Sujit Kalkal to approach the Delhi High Court to get the decision overturned. "As you all know, we had requested the government for additional time for preparing for the Asian Games.

We had requested them to hold our trials after August 10, and the government gave us time as well, following which we came out here for training. "But, over the last 3-4 days, it has emerged that direct entries are being sent for two weights (categories)," Sakshi, who is currently training in the US, said.

Stuart Broad -- one of the greatest England pacers ever -- is set to retire with the conclusion of the fifth and final Ashes Test against Australia. The right-arm pacer has over 840 international wickets to his name. He last played a white-ball match for England in 2016 but has been a regular in Test cricket. His seriousness about the longest format of the game could be observed from the fact that Broad has over 600 Test wickets to his credit. He is only behind James Anderson on the list of leading England wicket takers in Test cricket.

Former India fast bowler RP Singh said pacer Umran Malik will have to improve his skills as a bowler as speed alone cannot be his weapon, adding that he is one of the bowlers in fray to play in the World Cup. “You have a good number of matches before the World Cup. He can get 5-6 games in the Asia Cup, and three more matches (against Australia). Umran has the advantage of pace. But the issue with him is the skill — his deliveries do not move much,” RP Singh said. “In international cricket, speed alone cannot be the only weapon. You have to make a game-plan as well, and that is something he is not learning as quickly as he should. He also concedes a lot of runs. But he seems to be in the loop for the World Cup because he has the pace." “But he should also get game-time. You cannot have someone playing one match and then sitting out for two. If you think Umran is a long-term option then he has to be polished accordingly,” said RP Singh during an interaction organised by Jio Cinema.
Indian football's "rapid strides in recent past" and an upsurge in public interest in the sport presented a "compelling case" for the inclusion of the men's and women's teams for the upcoming Asian Games, national federation president Kalyan Chaubey said. The participation of the Indian men's and women's football sides in the Hangzhou Games was earlier in doubt as per the sports ministry's criteria of sending teams which are ranked in top-8 in the continent.
