Asian Games bronze-winner shot-putter Kiran Baliyan has been provisionally suspended by the National Anti Doping Agency (NADA) for testing positive for a banned substance as a slew of athletes across sports figured in the latest list of dope offenders. Surprisingly, Olympic medallist Bajrang Punia's name is missing from the latest update though he figured in a previous list issued by the NADA recently. The NADA had, on June 23, suspended Punia for a second time, three weeks after its Anti-Disciplinary Doping panel (ADDP) had revoked his suspension on the grounds that he was not served a "notice of charge" by the national body.

Vinesh Phogat Opposes Sports Ministry's Decision To Restore Wrestling Federation of India Affiliation

Olympian wrestler and Congress MLA from Haryana, Vinesh Phogat, on Wednesday opposed the decision of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports to lift the suspension of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), restore its affiliation and hand over the reins to the current set of office-bearers. The Sports Ministry suspended the Sanjay Singh-led federation three days after the elections over the announcement to hold U15 and U20 nationals and has asked the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to establish a temporary panel to oversee the operations of the WFI. On Monday, it decided to lift the suspension following an order by the Delhi High Court.

Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, on Tuesday, emphasized that revoking Wrestling Federation of India (WFI)'s suspension was essential to allow Indian grapplers' participation in upcoming tournaments, failing which would have been an "injustice" to the athletes. The Ministry has lifted the suspension on the WFI, bringing an end to the months of uncertainty and paving the way for the resumption of activities, including selection trials for the upcoming Asian Championship in Amman. "According to the High Court order, it was necessary to recognize WFI so that we can send our wrestlers for the Asian Championship and World Championship. Otherwise, it would have been an injustice to the future of our country's wrestlers," Mandaviya told reporters.

Wrestling Federation Of India Returns To Old Office After Failure To Find New Premises Due To Sports Ministry's Ban

The office of the suspended Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) has returned to the house of former WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh at 21, Ashoka Road, Janpath after the management failed to get a new place due to the ban imposed by the Sports Ministry, a WFI official said. WFI office had moved out from Brij Bhushan's house to Hari Nagar, following accusations of sexual harassment imposed on him by India's top wrestlers including Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik in 2023.

Vinesh Phogat responded to allegations from Sakshi Malik that the protest against former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh developed cracks when "people close to" Vinesh began to fill her mind with "greed". Olympic medallists Sakshi Malik and Aman Sehrawat, along with former world championship bronze-winner Geeta Phogat, on Monday announced that they would soon launch a Wrestling Champions Super League (WCSL) for the country's budding grapplers but the national federation has refused to sanction the initiative. Sakshi, along with Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat, had spearheaded the wrestlers' protest against ousted Wrestling Federation of India President Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who was accused of sexual harassment.
