Monday fantasy hockey tips - NHL picks, matchups, more

It's not the most glorious NHL schedule to kick off the final scoring period in fantasy hockey. In weekly formats, today is the last time you will set your lineup, so keep in mind the extended scoring period.

And don't forget the fantasy season ends on April 13 — not on April 14. This three-game Monday slate doesn't pop by any means.

It features some good defensive teams with the Minnesota Wild, Nashville Predators, Vegas Golden Knights and, though they haven't been showing it as much lately, the Dallas Stars.

We could get surprised though as the Golden Knights, Predators and the Seattle Kraken also play on Tuesday. None of those three teams have an obviously lighter matchup on either day, so the goaltending choices are up in the air until we get some confirmations. Amazingly, with the regular season's finish line well in sight, the majority of Tuesday's 10-game slate still carries significant playoff-related implications for at least one side. Which makes it easier on fantasy managers to assemble their own lineups. It's not like prominent heavy-hitters — unless hurt (see: Jack Eichel) — are going to sit out with so much on the line. So, rating the matchups themselves becomes all the more important, particularly in gauging streaming and Daily Fantasy options. For instance, there are some real tough doozies out West that might not reap a ton of fantasy scoring — goals, assists — altogether. Oilers vs. Avalanche serving as one noted exception.
KEITH JACKSON: Yes. Unfortunately, Kevin Clancy simply isn't up to the job. But when his VAR is even less competent then what chance does the guy have? The decision to chalk off the Alfredo Morelos 'goal' reflects horribly on our officials. DAVID McCARTHY: Absolutely. Morelos' goal should have stood and the first goal in these games are almost always crucial. MICHAEL GANNON : Rangers are entitled to feel hard done by. The ruled out goal was harsh but the ref’s view made it understandable. They had a decent case for a penalty but there was no sign of handball for the second. FRASER WILSON: Most weeks some club or other will contact the SFA over a refereeing decision or two. What good it does I’m not sure. The Morelos disallowed goal was harsh as both players had hands on each other. But I can’t see anything wrong with Celtic’s second goal.

Strap in folks; after a day of complete dormancy, we're likely in for the wildest 13 hours of hockey this year. However, just because every NHL team is in action this lively Saturday, doesn't mean you'll find all of your choice fantasy assets on the ice, or in a favorable position to contribute. More than ever, matchups matter. In fact, some of the day's most intriguing tilts — Vegas versus Dallas, Nashville versus Winnipeg — carry less overall fantasy promise on paper, aside from the usual stars, than other more meaningless contests.
OWINGS MILLS, Md. — The Ravens declined to answer any questions about Lamar Jackson at Wednesday's pre-draft news conference, but general manager Eric DeCosta did have something interesting to say about Baltimore's quarterback position.
