Men's Hockey World Cup 2023: India drawn with England, Wales and Spain in Pool D

Wales in Pool D, as the draw for the 2023 FIH Men's Hockey World Cup was held here on Thursday. Ranked world number five, India are the highest-ranked team in their pool.

The group-stage winners will advance straight to the quarterfinals while the teams placed second and third will have to play crossover matches, which will decided their stay in the tournament.

In Pool A, Commonwealth Games champions Australia are clubbed along with Argentina, France and Chile. Pool B includes reigning world champion Belgium, South Korea, fourth-ranked Germany and Japan.

The Netherlands, New Zealand, Malaysia and Chile are placed in Pool C. While the iconic Kalinga Hockey Stadium in Bhubaneswar hosted the previous edition of the World Cup as well and was lauded world over for its exceptional infrastructure, this time the coveted event will also be held in the heart of Odisha's hockey belt, Rourkela, a region famous for its legacy in the sport, having produced numerous international players.

The hosts will play their remaining two group games against England at the same venue two days later on January 15 and will then travel to Bhubaneswar where they will play their third group game against Wales at Kalinga Stadium on January 19. It's the second consecutive time that Odisha will be hosting the quadrennial event and a lot is expected after the grand success of the 2018 edition which was won by Belgium.
The Indian hockey team will start its 2023 Hockey World Cup Campaign against Spain at the newly-built Birsa Munda International Hockey Stadium in Rourkela on January 13 according to the schedule released by the International Federation of Hockey (FIH) on Tuesday. India, who won the bronze medal at Tokyo 2020, will face England, ranked No. 6 in the world, on January 15 at the same location. On January 19, the Indian men's hockey team will play its final Pool D game at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar, the second location for the 2023 men's Hockey World Cup, versus Wales, ranked 16th in the world.
India, who won the bronze medal at Tokyo 2020, will face England, ranked No. 6 in the world, on January 15 at the same location.
The All India Football Federation (AIFF), however, did not mention the teams the Indians will play against. "These friendlies have been planned as part of the team's preparation for the upcoming FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup, which is scheduled to take place in India from October 11," the AIFF said in a release.
