The snooker player Mark King has been suspended from the World Snooker Tour amid an investigation into irregular betting patterns.

The allegation concerns King’s 4-0 defeat to Joe Perry in last month’s first round of the Welsh Open. A statement from the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association read: “WPBSA chairman Jason Ferguson has today taken the decision to suspend Mark King from attending or competing on the World Snooker Tour with immediate effect. “This follows an initial investigation of irregular betting patterns reported to the WPBSA on the match between Mark King and Joe Perry at the Welsh Open on 13th February 2023. “The suspension will remain in place until the conclusion of the investigation or any subsequent charges that may or may not be brought.

Mark King has the right to appeal this decision.” King’s only ranking title came at the 2016 Northern Ireland Open after defeating Barry Hawkins 9-8, while his world ranking peaked in 2002 at No 11.

He currently lies 57th on the one-year list. Manchester City were left ruing missed chances after Arsenal’s punchy second-half comeback from a goal down to win 2-1. “I thought the first half was some of the best stuff we’ve played,” said City’s manager, Gareth Taylor, after his side failed to finish off an exhausted and depleted Arsenal. “I thought we should have had more than the 1-0 at half-time but we said if 1-0 has to be enough then make it be enough.” Taylor insisted there would be “a few more twists and turns” in the title race, with City and Arsenal still to play Manchester United, and Chelsea hosting Arsenal at Kingsmeadow, but City’s hopes of a first league title since 2016 have been dealt a massive blow. For all the improvements Erik ten Hag brings to Manchester United, there remains a soft centre. Their record away from home against top 10 opposition could prove costly in the race for the Champions League. Though Newcastle United did not blow Ten Hag’s team away like Liverpool did last month, they were deserved, easy victors. Ten Hag might look to the steel in midfield that was the core of Newcastle’s win, with Bruno Guimarães outstanding and Sean Longstaff supplying artisanship and exertion alongside him. It was not a gala Sunday afternoon for the Bruno Fernandes fan club, and Casemiro was again glaringly missed, even if he was among the guilty at Anfield. Ten Hag’s late readjustment of his team, removing centre-backs to go for broke, backfired as Callum Wilson scored soon after. It is difficult to imagine Howe taking such high-risk gambles. His reward was revenge for Wembley and a tighter command of that top-four objective. John Brewin
