Manchester United progress under Erik ten Hag will be clear with Wolves team selection

A year ago nobody could quite be certain what Erik ten Hag saw as his best Manchester United XI, including Ten Hag himself. When the 2022/23 season began, Raphael Varane was on the bench and Christian Eriksen was up front.

Brighton won at Old Trafford on the opening weekend. Things got worse at Brentford a week later but from that wreckage, a clearer picture began to emerge.

Looking back, those defeats at the start of last season were the beginning of the end for David de Gea, Harry Maguire and Fred, at least.

De Gea lasted until the summer before being released, Maguire started just six of the next 36 Premier League games and Fred just 10 of them.
