Manchester United suffered a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Newcastle in the Premier League fixture at St James' Park. Teenager Kobbie Mainoo returned to the midfield, with Anthony Martial preferred to Rasmus Hojlund up front for the Saturday night game.

United struggled to convert any of their chances in the first half with Newcastle going closer to breaking the deadlock. Kieran Trippier hit the bar from a free-kick with goalkeeper Andre Onana beaten but the match remained goalless at half time.

Newcastle's pressure eventually paid off when Anthony Gordon tapped in at the back post after a cross from Trippier. Gordon was completely unmarked and Aaron Wan-Bissaka switched off.

Ten Hag took Marcus Rashford and Martial off for Hojlund and Antony and United had a late goal chalked off for offside. Our chief United writer Samuel Luckhurst was at the game and here are his player ratings.
