Manchester United and Man City to be banned from rejoining European Super League even if they wanted
Manchester United and Manchester City will be banned from joining any breakaway leagues - including the European Super League - under a proposed new government legislation.
United and City were two of the 12 clubs who shook European football in 2021 when they announced plans to leave the Premier League and form a closed Super League.
Fan protests and widespread criticism saw the clubs withdraw one-by-one, until just Barcelona and Real Madrid were left trying to resurrect the proposals.
The idea seemed dead, with the Manchester clubs both fined by the Premier League and UEFA - until the European Court of Justice ruled on Thursday that UEFA and FIFA acted unlawfully in blocking clubs from joining other leagues.
