Lisandro Martinez has hit back at those who criticised his early performances at Manchester United. Martinez was handed his first international call-up since joining United this month and he played the full 90 minutes in the early hours of Saturday morning as Argentina beat Honduras 3-0.

Lautaro Martinez and a Lionel Messi brace ensured it was a comfortable outing for the Reds defender. It has not been all plain sailing for Martinez since he arrived from Ajax in the summer, with many pundits claiming the centre-back was too short to operate in the Premier League after a couple of tough early showings against Brighton and Brentford.

However, the 24-year-old has recovered well and even won United's Player of the Month award for August. "To be honest, it’s a dream come true to be playing at such a big club as Manchester United, especially playing in the Premier League, which I think is one of the best leagues in the world," he said. "It’s nice to catch the rhythm of the Premier League, so I’m very happy.

I don't pay attention [to criticism]. "I believe in myself, I trust myself. I always work hard every day. That's what's going to give you results at the end." Once Martinez returns from international duty he will be preparing for a huge clash in the Premier League as United travel to Manchester City. READ NEXT:
