Manchester City suffered defeat on penalties at the hands of Arsenal in the Community Shield at Wembley. Treble winners City took on the Gunners in the capital for the traditional curtain raiser of the new campaign.

As holders of both the Premier League and the FA Cup, City took on top flight runners-up the Gunners. City looked to be heading for victory after Cole Palmer's marvellous curling effort gave Pep Guardiola's side the advantage towards the closing stages of the second half.

However, Arsenal equalised deep into stoppage time after Leandro Trossard's strike took a couple of deflections and trickled past a wrongfooted Stefan Ortega.

After the 1-1 draw, the clash was decided on penalties and the Gunners emerges as 4-1 victors. Kevin De Bruyne struck the crossbar with his effort, while Rodri was denied by Aaron Ramsdale.
