The President of the United States of America Joe Biden scored a spectacular own goal as he labelled the New Zealand's rugby team 'The Black and Tans.' The All Blacks – as they are more famously known – were called by a name given to the temporary constables recruited by the RIC during the Irish War of Independence.
The gaffe caused a slack-jawed response from those within the room in Dundalk as Biden regaled the success of relation Rob Kearney securing victory over the world's finest rugby union team in Chicago during the summer of 2019.
Biden appeared to say Kearney and Ireland "beat the hell out of the Black and Tans”, as he gave a fist bump to the audience during his tour of Ireland to mark the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday which included a whistle stop meeting with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak before continuing onto Dundalk on Wednesday evening.
