There remain plenty of rumours over his impending exit, with some reports also suggesting that Dada wanted to continue being the chief of the richest cricket board in the world. The fact, however, is that Roger Binny is all but set to replace him at the helm.
BCCI president and is likely to get the top job unopposed, Board vice president Rajeev Shukla said. Binny, 67, is so far the only candidate to have filed nomination for the post and if no more candidate emerges, he will replace Sourav Ganguly as BCCI chief when the Board holds its AGM in Mumbai on October 18. After hectic parleys and back-channel discussions in the past one week, it was decided that Binny would be the 36th Board president, one of the sources familiar with the development, said. Jay Shah, son of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, has also filed nomination and will continue as BCCI secretary for a second consecutive term if no more candidate throws his hat in the ring.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) vice-president Rajeev Shukla said on Tuesday that former cricketer Roger Binny has filed nomination for the post of board president and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Ashish Shelar has filed nomination for treasurer and they are likely to be elected unopposed. "I have filed nomination for the post of vice-president, Roger Binny has filed nomination for the president, Jay Shah has filed for secretary and Ashish Shelar for treasurer. As of now, the situation is that all will be appointed unopposed," said Shukla while interacting with the media.
BCCI president Sourav Ganguly, who reached Mumbai on Monday evening, had a lot of meetings with the stakeholders of the national cricket body in New Delhi, last week. The former India captain was keen to continue as BCCI President but he was told that there is no precedence of giving a second term to the Board president. "Sourav was offered IPL chairmanship but he politely declined the offer. His logic was that he cannot accept becoming head of a sub-committee in BCCI after heading the same institution. He had expressed interest in continuing in the position," the BCCI source said.
Roger Binny, former Indian cricket team star and member of the 1983 World Cup winning team, is likely to be the next BCCI President replacing Sourav Ganguly, sources told NDTV. Binny is currently serving as an office bearer in the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA). He has previously served as a member of the BCCI selection committee. The name of Ganguly, a former India captain who became the BCCI president in October, 2019, is likely being discussed as the next International Cricket Council (ICC) chairman, the sources added.
Cricket in India (BCCI) will happen in Mumbai on Tuesday ahead of the organisation's Annual General Meeting (AGM), as per sources. The board's AGM will take place on October 18 in Mumbai.
