India vs Ireland: Ravichandran Ashwin Is Blunt As Ever, Doubts "There Would Be A Fight"

India's star spinner Ravichandran Ashwin came out with a blunt take while talking about the side's ongoing three-match T20I series against Ireland in Dublin.

The series kicked off on Friday with Jasprit Bumrah, who made a return to international cricket after an 11-month injury lay-off, leading the Indian side to a two-run victory via DLS method after rain came strong and forced the match to be called off.

While referring to the two-match T20I contest between India and Ireland from 2022, Ashwin said that he doubts the Paul Stirling-led side would be able to give a fight to India. "Last time India toured Ireland for T20s, the home side were more than competitive but this time I really doubt there would be a fight," wrote Ashwin on X, formerly known as Twitter. "We won a game defending 225 by 4 runs last time! "This attack consisting of Arshdeep, Bumrah and Prasidh might just be too much to handle," he added.

The Asia Cup 2023 got off to a cracking start with Nepal bowlers giving Pakistan batters a run for their money in the opening match in Multan on Wednesday. Pakistan were two down inside the first seven overs with only 25 runs on board. Then experienced duo Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan stitched a steady stand as Pakistan looked like heading towards a good score. Just then, with Rizwan batting on 44, the wicketkeeper-batter got run out in a strange fashion.
As the Asia Cup 2023 begins, it's the India and Pakistan teams that are being considered the 'favourites' for the title. Though it was the Sri Lankan team that won the title last time around (in the T20 version of the tournament), India and Pakistan are being seen as the two outright favourites. While the Indian team has won the tournament, in the ODI version, the most number of times, Pakistan have really pulled their socks up in the last few years. Veteran Indian spinner, Ravichandran Ashwin, in his preview for the Asia Cup 2023, tried to decode the rise of the Paksitan team over the last 5-6 years, and what makes them favourites this year, alongside the Indian team.
The third T20I between India and Ireland scheduled for Wednesday at Dublin was called off due to rain without a ball being bowled. With this, India has captured the series 2-0. The rain was such that both teams could not even get the opportunity to toss the coin and decide who would bat or bowl first. In the first T20I, India won by two runs as per Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method. India had reduced the home side to just 139/7 in 20 overs after opting to bowl first.
With the announcement of India's Asia Cup 2023 squad, there have been debates ranging in social media on whether it is a good squad. While most expected names got a call-up, a couple of them missed the berth. India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who is not part of the squad, is irritated at such discussions. Ashwin talked about two players who were selected in the Asia Cup squad to drill home the point. One among them is Tilak Varma, who is yet to play an ODI, while the other is Suryakumar Yada, whose ODI form has been very bad, a fact accepted by the player himself.
India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who has often been subjected to unfair criticism for running out batters at non-striker's end for backing up too far, reignited the debate on the mode of dismissal. On Monday, Ashwin posted a video on social media in which a bowler run outs the batter at non-striker's end -- a dismissal that is still a matter of debate despite it not coming under cricket's 'unfair play' anymore. "Winning dismissal," wrote Ashwin on X, formerly known as Twitter, with a laughing emoji. "More awareness and mindfulness required towards the closing stages of a game," he added.
