There were no definite cues but it seemed like an audition when the struggling K L Rahul and the much younger Shubman Gill batted simultaneously during a training session on Monday ahead of the third Test against Australia.

Stripped of India vice-captaincy following his prolonged lean patch in the five-day format, Rahul put in the hard yards in what could possibly be the final training session before the game, beginning Wednesday.

Both batted in adjacent nets for around 30 minutes under the supervision of head coach Rahul Dravid. Rahul has got an extended run as the team management has immense faith in his abilities but with every failure, the pressure is mounting on the stylish opener.

After clinching the four-match Test series of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia 2-1, Team India is all set to face the same opponents again in a three-match ODI series. The first match of the series will be played on Friday at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. As skipper Rohit Sharma will be unavailable for the first match due to his family commitments, all-rounder Hardik Pandya will be donning the skipper's cap. Team India's last outing in the 50-over format was against New Zealand, where they clinched a 3-0 clean sweep. As the first ODI against Australia is just about to begin in less than 24 hours from now, it will be interesting to see that who will be getting a place in the playing XI.
India will take the field on Friday without regular captain Rohit Sharma, who will miss the game due to family commitments. Hardik Pandya will be leading the hosts in the absence of Rohit. The stand-in captain confirmed a new opening pair for the hosts for the first match. He said that if will be the pair of Ishan Kishan and Shubman Gill, who will open the innings for India. Notably, both the batters are going through great form. The duo has also hit a double century each in the ODI format recently.
Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja were unarguably the two biggest heroes for India in the 2-1 Border-Gavaskar Trophy triumph. The two finished as the top wicket-takers, with Ashwin claiming 25 scalps and Jadeja 22. The series win enabled India's progression to the ICC World Test Championship final which will also be played against Australia in June. Though Ashwin and Jadeja were central to India's success in the 4-match series, both of them might not get to feature in the WTC final as it will be played at the Oval in London.
Pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar is arguably one of the finest pacers India ever produced. Making his fiery debut in a T20I against Pakistan in 2012, the Meerut-born cricketer has scalped 90 wickets in the shortest format, with two five-wicket hauls. Over the years, he took Team India across the line on numerous occasions, with his blistering pace. However, Bhuvneshwar faced a lot of flak after he failed to leave a mark in the 2022 T20 World Cup. The 33-year-old pacer could only scalp four wickets in the entire tournament and leaked a lot of runs in the death overs. He played his last match for India against New Zealand in November 2022 and has been out of favor since then.
Star India batter Virat Kohli hit his first Test century in over three years on Day 4 of the fourth Test against Australia. Kohli had a tough 2021 and 2022, failing to reach three figures in over 1,200 days. However, since scoring his first T20I century during the Asia Cup last year, Kohli hasn't looked back. The 34-year-old finished the T20 World Cup in Australia last year as the leading run-scorer and then hit three ODI centuries including two -- 113 and 166 not out -- against Sri Lanka in January, earlier this year.
