Former cricketer Anil Kumble reacted to India's disappointing defeat to New Zealand in the second Test of the series in Pune, stating that India's batting has let the hosts down. Tom Latham's New Zealand side made history by defeating Rohit Sharma's team by 113 runs at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune on Saturday, securing their first-ever series win in India. This loss marks India's first home Test series defeat since 2012, ending an 18-series unbeaten streak--the longest home winning sequence for any team.
What was almost unthinkable till a few days, looks like a possibility now. The Rohit Sharma-led Indian cricket team are only one loss away from being clean-sweeped at home by New Zealand. For the fist time in 18 series (the duration of which spanned 12 years) India have lost a Test series at home. India's record of 18 consecutive bilateral home series wins has come to an end - the longest such sequence for any team.
The Indian cricket team slumped to a historic Test loss to New Zealand in Pune on Saturday that saw the side's 12-year winning streak at home end in spectacular fashion. Last time, India lost a Test series at home, MS Dhoni was still the captain while Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir were all playing. A shambolic batting performance during the first inning of the Pune Test might have just put the hosts India at a rare risk of a series loss home and has put their 12-year, 18 series-long unbeaten record at in jeopardy.
After an unfulfilling half-century against New Zealand in the Bengaluru Test, Virat Kohli's poor run of form continued in the Pune Test. The star batter arrived on the pitch after the dismissal of Shubman Gill but only lasted for 9 balls. Attempting a bizarre shot, Virat was dismissed for just 1 run by Mitchell Santner. Seeing Kohli depart for another low score in the series, India legend and former coach Anil Kumble pointed a finger at the batter's absence from the domestic circuit, suggesting a stint in the Irani Cup or other such events might have helped him better prepare.
Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal became the youngest Indian to score 1000 Test runs in a single calendar year during the Day 2 of the second Test against New Zealand at Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium on Friday. The 22-year-old batter surpassed the previous record held by Dilip Vengsarkar, who reached the 1000-run mark at age 23 in 1979. Currently, Jaiswal is second in the list of highest Test run-scorers in 2024, behind England's Joe Root, who has amassed 1305 runs in 14 matches. Jaiswal's form this year has seen him accumulate 1007 runs in just 10 matches, averaging 59.23 with two centuries and six half-centuries.
