HYDERABAD, India : England vice-captain Ollie Pope's batting masterclass in the opening test in Hyderabad has jolted India into a rethink of their plans ahead of the second test in Visakhapatnam this week. The hosts suffered only their fourth defeat in a home test in the last decade after Pope smashed 196 in arguably the best knock by a touring batter in India. The right-hander played audacious scoops and numerous sweep shots - both traditional and reverse - to disrupt the rhythm of the Indian spinners and forcing the hosts to alter their field placements.Pope's approach was a refreshingly change from that adopted by most touring batters, who often try just to hang around and hope for success.India head coach Rahul Dravid was amazed at how Pope nailed so many "high-risk shots" and acknowledged they would have to put a plan together for the batter before the second test gets underway on Friday."I haven't seen a better exhibition of sweeping and reverse sweeping in these conditions against that quality of bowling," the former skipper said after their defeat."Having said that, for us now it's important that we respond and come up with some plans and some strategies and see how we can maybe make him play those shots from probably even more difficult lengths."India's spin trio of Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel claimed a combined 14 of the 20 English wickets but Dravid felt they could have bowled better."Credit to him (Pope), but we were a little bit off."In the next test match, if we get our execution right, I hope he makes a mistake."Pope's 21 fours included a no-look reverse ramp shot, the batter scooping the ball over wicketkeeper Srikar Bharat's head to the boundary. The 26-year-old said playing reverse

Former South African batting legend AB de Villiers opened up on Indian wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan's absence from international cricket following a break, saying he himself has been through this situation and there should be proper communication between a player and team management/board. De Villiers' comments come as Ishan continues to remain absent from international cricket, having last played in a T20I match against Australia at home in late November. Following that, he asked team management to release him from the Test squad for the South Africa series happening in December-January due to personal reasons. The 25-year-old was in the T20I squad in South Africa in December 2023 but did not take part in any of the three games. He also did not take part in the ongoing Ranji Trophy.
Rahul Dravid will continue to remain in the position of India's head coach till the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024 in June this year, confirmed BCCI secretary Jay Shah. Dravid's contract ended after the ODI World Cup final last year, but he was asked to continue in his role along with other support staff for the December-January tour to South Africa without finalising the tenure. But Shah said he held an initial talk with Dravid here before arriving at the decision to retain the former captain's services till the ICC showpiece to be held in the West Indies and the USA. “After the (2023) World Cup, Rahul bhai had to leave for the South Africa tour immediately. We did not get to meet in between which finally happened today,” Shah said here on the sidelines of the renaming function of the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium on Wednesday night.
Indian skipper Rohit Sharma on Thursday overtook former skipper Sourav Ganguly to become the fourth-highest run-maker in international cricket. Rohit accomplished this feat against England in the fourth Test at Rajkot. In the match, Rohit scored his 11th Test ton, a knock of 131 runs in 196 balls, with 14 fours and three sixes. BCCI secretary Jay Shah on Wednesday confirmed that Rohit Sharma will lead the Indian cricket team in the upcoming T20 World Cup being jointly hosted by the West Indies and the USA. With all-rounder Hardik Pandya still recovering from an ankle injury suffered in October last year, the board feels Rohit must continue as skipper in the format. "Rohit was captaining (in the past in other formats) and he came back for the Afghanistan series, which means we were going to let him continue forward," Shah told the media on the sidelines of the ceremony to rename the SCA Stadium after former board secretary Niranjan Shah.
India will be playing the T20 World Cup 2024, to be organised in the Caribbean and the USA, under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma, said BCCI secretary Jay Shah at an event in Rajkot on Wednesday. India have had Hardik Pandya as their full-time skipper in the shortest format but the heartbreaking loss in the final of the 2023 World Cup to Australia have reignited the murmurs of senior batters Virat Kohli and Rohit returning for the T20 showpiece in June.
The conversation surrounding India wicket-keeper batter Ishan Kishan has been dominating headlines since he opted out of the Test series against South Africa back in December 2022. Kishan cited 'personal reasons' to not play in the two-match Test series against the Proteas and he has not featured in the national side since then. With the T20 World Cup taking place this year, his absence was viewed as a major concern for his career but according to a latest report, he is all set to play a T20 tournament before representing Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League. A report from Dainik Bhaskar claimed that Kishan took the break to give time to his family and will now play in the DY Patil tournament in Mumbai.
