Independent regulator able to block teams from joining European Super League, government says

English football's new independent regulator will herald a “radical transformation” in the governance of football, that is according to the government.

The regulator will “oversee the financial sustainability of the game and put fans back at the heart of how football is run,” read a statement on Gov.uk.

Ad Its remit will include the power to block clubs from joining breakaway leagues — such as the European Super League — strengthening directors' and owners’ tests, give fans a greater say in running of clubs – including over key decisions like badge and name changes – and prevent the failings that led to crises at clubs like Bury, Macclesfield Town and Derby.
