Iga Swiatek has issued an apology to Donna Vekic on social media after being accused of using “unnecessary” net tactics against the Croatian star during the final of the San Diego Open.

The world number one stormed to her eighth title of 2022 –– defeating Vekic in three sets, 6-3 3-6 6-0. However, the Pole has been criticised for one particular moment during the match, which some fans have suggested could be classed as a form of hindrance.

Facing break point in the second set, Swiatek chose to come to the net during the rally and proceeded to wave her arms in the air as Vekic was returning the ball.

In the end, Vekic won the point and went on to claim the set, but many were nonetheless unhappy with the Pole’s actions. A number of people took to social media to voice their discontent over the incident.
