Grant Shapps replaces Suella Braverman as Home Secretary after withering attack on Liz Truss

Grant Shapps will become the UK's new Home Secretary. Suella Braverman resigned from her post earlier on Wednesday afternoon - becoming one of the country's shortest ever serving Home Secretaries.

She said she had resigned after sending an email with confidential government business from her personal account. But her resignation letter was a withering attack on Liz Truss, in which Ms Braverman wrote: "As soon as I realised my mistake, I rapidly reported this on official channels, and informed the Cabinet Secretary.

As Home Secretary I hold myself to the highest standards and my resignation is the right thing to do. "The business of government relies upon people accepting responsibility for their mistakes.

Pretending we haven't made mistakes, carrying on as if everyone can't see that we have made them, and hoping that things will magically come right is not serious politics.
