Female Yellow-Green depart for T20 World Cup qualifiers in Uganda

cricketNigeria women’s national cricket team, the Female ‘Yellow-Greens,’ will depart the country today for the International Cricket Council (ICC) Women T20 World Cup Africa qualifier in Uganda, which will run from December 9 to 17 at Entebbe Cricket Oval.Currently ranked 30th in the world, the female national team is hoping to pick one of the two tickets at stake during the event.The qualifiers will feature eight teams that have been divided into two groups.

Group A has Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Botswana and Kenya, while Nigeria will feature in Group B, alongside Rwanda, Namibia and hosts Uganda.Team Coach, Leke Oyede, said the team has camped at the Cricket High-Performance Centre at Edo Boys’ High School, Benin City, for the better of part of the last six weeks, adding that the players are primed for the qualifiers.“The team has the benefit of being together for a long time and has put a lot of work to address the weaknesses we observed from the last events they took part in.

So, we are going to Uganda assured of better performance, compared to our participations earlier in the year,” he said.Coach Oyede listed the team’s long serving captain, Blessing Etim, as the leader of the pack.

She will be supported by Sunday Salome, Esther Sandy, Lucky Piety, Victory Igbinedion, Favour Eseigbe and Christabel Chukwuonye.Sarah Etim, Abigail Igbobie, Lilian Udeh, Rukayat Abdulrasaq, Peculiar Agboya, Adekunle Adeshola and Rachael Samson also made the team.

"The Zimbabwe Cricket Board has accepted Dave Houghton's resignation from his position as head coach of the Zimbabwe senior men's national team with immediate effect," the board said in a statement. "Houghton said he had 'lost the change room' after 18 months in charge and felt that a 'new voice' was needed to take the team forward," the statement added. His resignation letter was sent just ahead of a board meeting Wednesday to look into the World Cup campaign. Zimbabwe lost to Namibia and Uganda at a recent qualifying tournament. Zimbabwe have also just been beaten in a limited overs series against Ireland.
Australian pacer Josh Hazlewood, who has been tipped to create ripples in auction room, will be available for IPL 2024 only from the first week of May, as per the BCCI intimation to the teams. Hazlewood, who played an integral role in Australia's recent ODI World Cup win, will be away in March and April as the pacer and his wife are expecting their first child.
