England go for experience in Ashes opener against Test champions Australia

England have insisted they will be continuing with their aggressive brand of cricket in the Ashes series that starts in Edgbaston on Friday, but paucity of resources forced them to make a safe selection choice.

Veteran seamer Stuart Broad was named in the playing XI ahead of the quicker Mark Wood for the opening game of the five-match series against world Test champions Australia.

With James Anderson and Ollie Robinson declared fit to return to the XI after resting injury niggles against Ireland at Lord's, there was just one spot left in the seam attack.

Captain Ben Stokes did not have express quicks Jofra Archer and Olly Stone to choose from. So it was thought Wood would get the nod, especially since the home team intend to play the matches on relatively flat surfaces.

England are likely facing a big run chase to win the second Ashes Test after Australia dominated the third day at Lord’s. England started the day with a chance to get close to Australia’s first-innings score of 416, but slumped from 278-4 to 325 all out. Ad Usman Khawaja (58*) led Australia's patient response as they ground down England’s attack to finish on 130-2, a lead of 221.
Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting believes that England's pacer Ollie Robinson did not look dangerous in the Ashes as he has only taken wickets of tailenders. The English bowler has taken three wickets in the ongoing second Test match of the Ashes series against Australia on Thursday at Lord's. He had also taken five wickets in the first Ashes Test. Ponting in ICC Review said, "I don't think he's looked dangerous in the series at all. I mean, if you look at the wickets, he's got the tailenders out in each game. Yes he got Marnus (Labuschagne) in this innings here. But then he got (Nathan) Lyon and then he got (Josh) Hazlewood. So if he didn't get the 10 and 11 out, then he finishes his innings with one wicket at over four runs an over."
