It was a summer to remember in Birmingham as Team England carried the hopes of a nation on their shoulders at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
After gaining an unassailable 2-0 lead in the ongoing three-match ODI series against Zimbabwe, Team India would look to wrap up the series on Monday and register a clean sweep. In both the ODIs so far, Team India bowled first and bundled out the hosts for below par totals of 189 and 161. In the second ODI, all eyes were on KL Rahul on how he goes about his batting, but the stand-in skipper failed to leave a mark as he was dismissed after scoring just 1 run.
Kl Rahul-led Team India would look to keep their winning momentum going when they take the field against Zimbabwe in the second ODI of the three-match series on Saturday. In the first ODI, Team India did not break a sweat as they chased down the target of 190 with ten wickets in hand and 115 balls to spare. Shubman Gill and Shikhar Dhawan scored 82 and 81, helping the visitors go over the line. Earlier, Deepak Chahar, Prasidh Krishna and Axar Patel had returned with three wickets each to bundle out Zimbabwe for 189 inside 41 overs.
Skipper KL Rahul's form and fitness will be observed keenly when India take on Zimbabwe in a three-match series, starting Thursday, in 50-over format, which is fast losing popularity and struggling to retain its identity. Supposed to be one of the most vital cogs in India's T20 World Cup top-order, Rahul would like to make full use of the game time he gets as an opener during the three games against Regis Chakabva's side. Rahul's immediate task at hand after a two-month lay-off, during which he underwent a sports hernia surgery, is to keep his opening slot in T20 cricket and adapt to the team's philosophy of going hell for leather from ball one. It won't just be about runs that skipper Rohit Sharma or coach Rahul Dravid would be looking at when they monitor Rahul's performance in Zimbabwe. Rather they would like to check out his approach and the manner in which he is scoring runs, something he would need to tweak before that first Asia Cup game against Pakistan on August 28.
The Commonwealth Games Federation, Commonwealth Games Australia and the International Cricket Council have been criticised after allowing a player with COVID-19 to compete in the T20 final.
Double Olympic medalist PV Sindhu will be squaring off against Canada's Michelle Li in the women's singles badminton final event at the Commonwealth Games on Monday. The Indian shuttler paved her way into her second successive final after defeating Singapore's Yeo Jia Min 21-19 21-17 in a 49-minute contest. Sindhu started her CWG 2022 campaign with a thumping 21-4, 21-11 win against Maldives' Fathimath Nabaaha in the Round of 32. It will be interesting to see whether Sindhu will be able to bag India's 19th gold medal at CWG 2022 or not.
