Raheem Sterling made his official Chelsea debut as Thomas Tuchel’s side began the season with a win against Everton. A penalty converted by Jorginho at the end of first half injury time was the difference as Chelsea secured an all-important 1-0 victory and clean sheet to kick off the 2022/23 campaign.
Fans would’ve perhaps expected a more dominant performance from the Blues considering the gulf in quality between the two squads on paper, but Everton made it a hard game for Chelsea who had to dig in deep for the win.
In a game that wasn’t without negatives for Tuchel’s side, what of course matters is starting the season off correctly and coming away from a difficult ground to play at with a win.
In fact, Chelsea’s opening weekend victory was the first time they’ve won at Goodison Park since 2017. So considering the summer they’ve had and the fact they’re entering a new era of ownership, the win was very much a welcome one.
