BULAWAYO, Zimbabwe : Former England test batsman Gary Ballance scored an unbeaten century on debut to lead Zimbabwe in a sterling fightback on the fourth day of the first test against West Indies at the Queens Sports Club on Tuesday.Ballance, who switched allegiance last year and has already played for Zimbabwe in limited overs internationals this year, scored 137 runs to help them declare on 379-9 in reply to West Indies’ first innings tally of 447 for six declared. The 33-year-old left hander brought up his ton with a six over deep square leg as he and Brandon Mavuta put together a 135-run partnership for the eighth wicket, hauling Zimbabwe out of trouble after they had slumped to 192-7.The 25-year-old Mavuta, who claimed a maiden five-wicket haul on the first two days of rain-affected play, made 56 runs before being bowled by Jason Holder on a flat deck.

Harare-born Ballance, who moved to England as a schoolboy, was able to switch allegiances under International Cricket Council rules as a player can change between two different full member nations after a three-year stand-down period.Ballance made 23 test appearances for England between 2013 and 2017, scoring four centuries.

He joins Kepler Wessels as the only players to have scored centuries for two countries. Wessels did so for Australia and South Africa. (Writing by Mark Gleeson in Cape Town; Editing by Ken Ferris)

India bowling coach Troy Cooley is optimistic about star opener Smriti Mandhana returning to action during her side's ICC Women's T20 World Cup clash against West Indies on Wednesday. India and West Indies will be locking horns in their Group 2 clash of the tournament in Cape Town on Wednesday. India is in second place in the points tally with one win in one match and two points, below England, which has two wins in two and a total of four points. The 26-year-old sat out India's opening group match, a seven-wicket win over Pakistan, due to a finger injury. But India's star opener appears set to return for the clash at Newlands having come through a pre-match training session unscathed.
Mandhana participated in the team's training session on Tuesday and according to the team's bowling coach Troy Cooley, the 26-year-old left-handed opener did well in the nets. "She has been working very hard and she will be assessed after training," said Cooley. "She did everything that needed to be done and we are pretty confident she got through the session OK."Mandhana recently topped the bidding in the Women's Premier League auction when Royal Chargers Bangalore signed her for Rs 3.4 crore.
