Celtic are pushing for a box office loan deal for Benfica ace Paulo Bernardo as part of the Parkhead club’s late transfer dash.
The Portugal under 21 midfielder has been told by boss Roger Schmidt he is not part of his first team plans and will be allowed to head out for the season.
The 21-year-old is understood to have a huge £90m buy-out clause in his contract – which runs until 2027. But Record Sport believes Benfica would be willing to negotiate a more reasonable purchase option 12 months down the line.
Bernardo was tipped as a star of the future when part of Benfica’s B team and made the breakthrough into the senior side in 2021.
