Canada outlasts U.S. in shootout at women's world hockey tourney

BRAMPTON, Ontario — Jamie Lee Rattray scored the winner in the ninth round of the shootout and Canada defeated the United States 4-3 Monday night in the final preliminary round game for both teams at the women's world hockey championship.

The teams will turn their attention to the quarterfinals on Thursday after finishing 1-2 atop Group A. Sarah Fillier had a goal and an assist and Marie-Philip Poulin and Laura Stacey scored in regulation for Canada.

Goaltender Ann-Renee Desbiens earned the win. Hannah Bilka had a goal and an assist and Hilary Knight and Amanda Kessel also scored for the Americans.

Goaltender Aerin Frankel took the loss. Rattray buried the winner on a slick deke after Desbiens and Frankel went toe-to-toe through eight rounds of the shootout before being mobbed by teammates.

Hilary Knight had a hat trick, and the U.S. scored three times in the last four minutes to beat Canada 6-3 in the world women’s hockey championship final, ending a losing streak in the rivalry.
BRAMPTON, Ontario — Hilary Knight scored three times, including the go-ahead goal with 3:10 left in regulation, and the Americans won their 10th women's world hockey championships gold medal and first in four years with a 6-3 win over cross-border rival Canada on Sunday night.
It was yet another seesaw battle between Canada and the U.S. 
Canada will play the 2024 women's hockey world championship on rival territory.
