Confident Alfred Schreuder has launched an incredible defence of Calvin Bassey ahead of his league debut for Ajax this weekend.

The £19 million defender was sent off on his first appearance for the Amsterdam giants after coming on a sub in the Johan Cruyff Shield defeat to PSV Eindhoven.

He was handed a two-match ban, but is set to make his Eredivisie bow against Sparta Rotterdam on Sunday. And boss Schreuder has been miffed by criticism of the former Rangers man in the Netherlands.

He stressed: "Anyone who knows anything about football and who watched him at Rangers last season should know what his qualities are.
