Billie Eilish has surprised fans by making reference to Johnny Depp’s recent defamation trial against former partner Amber Heard while on stage at her Manchester gig last night (June 7).
The pop star made the first of two planned appearances at the AO Arena on Tuesday night. The shows mark the start of her UK tour, which will later head to London, Glasgow and Birmingham.
Alongside hits like Bad Guy and Happier Than Ever, Eilish performed a brand new track with her brother and co-writer Finneas O’Connell. READ MORE: Parklife 2022 Met Office weather forecast The pair sat on two stools while Finneas played the acoustic guitar for the unreleased melancholic song, which is named TV. “We haven’t played a new song live before it’s out since 2017 or 2018,” she told the crowd. “This is one we just wrote, and we just wanted to play for you.” With Finneas slowly strumming the guitar, and sometimes joining in with his sister, Eilish sings: “What’s the point of anything, all of my friends are missing again, that’s what happens when you fall in love." The song then appeared to reference recent happenings in the US including Johnny Depp’s multi-million dollar defamation trial against former partner Amber Heard. “The internet’s gone wild watching movie stars on trial, while they’re overturning Roe v Wade,” Eilish sang, to roars of approval from the audience.
The AO Arena performance marks Eilish’s first gig in England since she played at Reading festival in 2019. The 20-year-old is also set to take a headline slot at this year’s Glastonbury festival later this month.
