The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the decision to add pacer Avesh Khan to India's squad for the second Test against South Africa as a replacement for Mohammed Shami who remains unavailable due to an injury.

Shami was picked for the tour of South Africa but couldn't prove his fitness in time for the start of the series. Shami missed the first Test in Centurion as the BCCI waited for him to regain full fitness.

But, he was ruled out of the second Test too, prompting the board to name Avesh as his replacement. The BCCI, in a release, said: "The Men's Selection Committee has named Mr Avesh Khan as a replacement for Mr Mohd.

Shami for the second Test against South Africa to be played from 3rd-7th January 2024 in Cape Town." Avesh has so far claimed 149 wickets in 38 first-class games at 22.65.

Pacer Prasidh Krishna on Friday picked up a left quadriceps injury during Karnataka's Ranji Trophy match against Gujarat, casting a cloud of uncertainty over his availability for selection for the upcoming assignments, including India's home Test series against England. India pacer Prasidh limped out of the field after bowling 14.5 overs at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad during the Group C match. The paceman picked up the wickets of Manan Hingrajia and Siddharth Desai as Karnataka bundled out Gujarat for 264 runs in 88 overs on the first day.
The Newlands pitch has been in the headlines ever since the first day of the second Test between India and South Africa saw a whopping 23 wickets fall. As game resumed on the second day, India struck early, with Jasprit Bumrah sending back David Bedingham. However, not longer after the Proteas lost their 4th wicket of the second innings, play came to a brief halt as India pacer Mukesh Kumar complained of a hole in the pitch where his foot was landing while bowling. Though India captain Rohit Sharma downplayed the situation, hammers came out as the ground staff looked to resolve the matter.
With just one wicket to go and three reviews remaining, the Indian cricket team decided to make use of their resources, although knowing that the result was unlikely to come in their favour. Mohammed Siraj hit South Africa's Nandre Burger high on the right right, on Day 2 of the second Test at Cape Town, but the umpire had little interest in rewarding Team India's appeal. However, realising that India have three DRS calls to spare, Rohit contemplated going for a review, after a brief discussion with teammates, but eventually decided against taking it.
Emotions were heavily invested during the Indian cricket team's second and final Test match against South Africa at Newlands, Capetown. The guests suffered an innings-and-32-run drubbing in the first Test match in Centurion and this was their only chance to make up for it with a series-levelling win. Team India came with added energy and went on to win the game by 7 wickets that too within two days. What the win meant for the side was clearly visible when India skipper Rohit Sharma vented out his frustration with an animated celebration after taking the catch of Aiden Markram. The wicket more or less made sure that India had to chase a paltry total.
India fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah had a ball on Thursday with the pacer registering a six-wicket haul. The right-arm pace spearhead extracted the most out of the surface at Newlands, Cape Town on Day 2 of the second Test against South Africa. Bumrah's terrific show kept the fans in the stadium on the edge of their seats while those outside the venue remained glued to their television screens. While Bumrah has a massive fan following, an infact watching him wreak havoc on South African soil must be special as the little one was none other than his own son Angad.
The early conclusion of the Test series between India and South Africa leaves the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selection committee and the team management with some spare time to finalise the squad for the T20I series against Afghanistan. With the first match of the 3-T20I assignment set to begin on January 11, the selection committee are likely to meet on Friday and finalise the roster. For the first time in over a year, the veteran duo of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma could return to the shortest format, having reportedly made themselves available for selection.
