Erik ten Hag said Manchester United were "totally in control" in the race for a top-four Premier League finish after his side beat Aston Villa 1-0 on Sunday to end the visitors' 10-match unbeaten run. Bruno Fernandes scored shortly before half time at Old Trafford but fans had to endure a nervy afternoon as goal-shy United failed to kill off the game. The win lifted Ten Hag's team nine points clear of fifth-placed Tottenham, who were in action at Liverpool later on Sunday.

Liverpool maintained their unlikely pursuit of a Champions League place by beating Tottenham 4-3 in a thriller but Southampton and Leeds are staring into the abyss. People are no longer ignoring the massive turnaround Unai Emery has performed at Villa Park. There were not many personnel changes in January; teenage striker Jhon Durán was signed from Chicago Fire, Bertrand Traoré was recalled from loan at Istanbul Basaksehir and, most importantly, Alex Moreno joined from Real Betis. Lucas Digne has been deposed from the defence and Villa have only lost twice in Moreno’s 15 appearances, with the Spaniard quickly becoming integral to the system. He is popular off the pitch too, ingratiating himself with fans with a recent interview in English, smiling throughout despite not yet having a full mastery of the language. Moreno will enjoy the prospect of facing Antony, which will be a key battle with the Villa man keen to test the Brazilian’s defence as well as attack. Will Unwin
Aston Villa moved up to fifth in the Premier League with a 1-0 win over Fulham on Tuesday, as Leeds and Leicester played out a 1-1 draw in the battle to beat the drop. Villa are now unbeaten in 10 games as they make a late push for Europe thanks to a remarkable turnaround since Unai Emery took charge. Tyrone Mings scored the only goal at Villa Park as the England international headed in John McGinn's corner after 21 minutes. Emery's men did not reach the heights they have in recent weeks, but did enough to edge above Tottenham and to climb within five points of the top four, albeit having played more games than Newcastle and Manchester United in the battle for a place in next season's Champions League.
