Andrew Redmayne cemented his place in Australian football folklore this week after helping his national team secure a place at the 2022 World Cup finals in Qatar.
The 33-year-old goalkeeper, who plies his trade with Sydney FC, was brought on in the final minute of extra-time in place of first-choice Mathew Ryan specifically for the penalty shoot-out against Peru.
The winning team would book their place at this year’s World Cup, so sending on Redmayne was a huge call from Australia’s head coach Graham Arnold.
Ryan’s clean sheet remained intact after 120 minutes, after all. And it looked an even bigger gamble when Redmayne danced theatrically on his goal-line before facing each penalty.
