Leopard’s Dennis Foggia claimed pole position for the Moto3 Malaysian GP with a new lap record at the Sepang International Circuit.

Gaviota GasGas Aspar’s success continued as the squad locked out the front row, a late effort from new Moto3 Champion Izan Guevara denying teammate Sergio Garcia in the dying seconds with the pair 0.039s apart at the flag but the Italian’s 2’11.411 would sit a quarter of a second clear.

The tough weekend in Malaysia continued for John McPhee after technical issues plagued his Sterilgarda Husqvarna on Friday, the Scot completing FP3 21st with his place booked in Q1 alongside VisionTrack’s Scott Ogden and Josh Whatley. Tech3’s Deniz Öncü also joining the fight after suffering his worst weekend of the season with poor feeling throughout the 5.5km layout.

MT Helmets’ Ryusei Yamanaka led the pace as lightweight qualifying began. CIP Green Power’s Kaito Toba and Joel Kelso sitting second and third with Adrian Fernandez rounding out the promotion zone on the Tech3 KTM. His teammate continuing to struggle with the eleventh fastest time and an off track excursion at turn one while Ogden failed to set a qualifying time until the final strike after spending the majority of the session in the pits. His 2’14.802 lining him up narrowly ahead of his teammate at the back of the grid with McPhee eight places ahead.

A late move from Honda’s Taiyo Furusato split the CIP pairing as a trio of Japanese riders locked out the standings. Kelso collecting the final promotion on offer with Fernandez missing out at the flag.
