Zander Clark undergoing Hearts medical as Robbie Neilson closes in on Craig Gordon backup

Zander Clark is closing in on a shock post deadline day move to Hearts.

The Scotland squad goalkeeper has been without a club since leaving St Johnstone at the end of his contract in the summer. But now he is poised to undergo a medical ahead of penning a deal with the Jambos as a free agent in order to provide more cover between the sticks ahead of a bust schedule for the capital club.

Stoke City and Dundee United had both been keen on the 30-year-old shot stopper. But the window closed at midnight on Friday with Clark still clubless. The Scotland international had been linked with a move to Tannadice, but he elected to try his luck down south with some interest from Engand. Although it never materialised into a new home for the double cup winner. He could now join deadline day signing Stephen Humprys in the squad after he arrived on loan from Wigan Athletic.

Now Robbie Neilson looks set to take advantage and team Clark up with Scotland number one Craig Gordon in a goalkeeping duopoly at Tynecastle. Hearts only have Ross Stewart as senior back-up to Gordon and Clark’s arrival will provide stiff competition for the club captain.

With a gruelling schedule at home and abroad it also bolsters Neilson’s options ahead of the Europa Conference League group stage. Istanbul Basaksehir visit Gorgie on Thursday to open Group A. Third-placed Hearts travel to face Livingston on Saturday looking to get back to winning ways after being dumped out the League Cup by Kilmarnock on Wednesday.
