Young drivers could save up to £250 on car costs with clever insurance trick

Young drivers have the potential to save a whopping £250 on their car insurance with just one simple trick, according to Compare the Market. By adding an "experienced named" driver to their policy, motorists under the age of 24 can see significant savings.

Currently, the average car insurance premium for young drivers stands at around £1,783 per year. However, with the addition of a named driver, the average drops by 16%, saving them £240 and bringing the cost down to around £1,543.

But it's not just young drivers who can benefit from this tip. Compare the Market's research also revealed that motorists aged between 25 and 34 could save up to £250 by adding a more experienced driver to their policy.

For drivers in this age group, the average premium is currently around £625 if they have another named driver on the policy. This is in stark contrast to the £875 they would have to pay if there are no additional drivers, resulting in a 29% saving.

However, Compare the Market advises drivers to be cautious and ensure that all named drivers actually drive the car for the policy to be valid. It's important to note that simply adding names to the policy without them actively driving the vehicle could be considered "fronting," which is a type of insurance fraud.

Fronting involves listing a more experienced driver as the main driver on a vehicle, even though they do not do most of the driving. If caught, young drivers could face severe consequences, including an invalid policy, an unlimited fine, six penalty points, and a criminal record.
